Description of Session: With the increase in portability and mobility comes the increased demand in the power systems for these devices; specifically the use of lithium-ion batteries. They are found in almost all aspects of our modern lives from electronics to transportation and even the municipal power grid. They can range in size and power intensity, but the common factor is that a lithium-ion battery is extremely popular due to the amount of size to energy ratio that can be harnessed and drawn from to power their associated products.

With the increased demand and production of lithium-ion batteries comes the increase in risk in the storage, use, and disposal of these power sources. As a safety professional, you will encounter these batteries in many different forms and sizes and in this session you will come to understand the general design, common failures, and industry best practices for storage and response to incidents involving lithium-ion batteries. This session is valuable to both the new safety professional and experienced individual as it will cover both foundational knowledge and recent industry trends.

3 Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to describe the typical construction of the most commonly constructed lithium-ion batteries along with the general components required in each.
Participants will be able to name and describe the common failures that lead to thermal runaway along with explaining how best to prevent thermal runaway in lithium-ion battery failures.
Participants will be able to discuss industry best practices for safely responding to emergencies involving lithium-ion batteries.

Date & Time: Virtual on May 15th from 11:45AM – 1:00 PM.
